The news has been dominated this week by growing concerns about the work of a surgeon who worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital until 2022.
So what has happened at Great Ormond Street?
Following numerous complaints and a review instigated by the Royal College of Surgeons, surgeries performed on 721 children by Yaser Jabbar are being assessed to establish if medical malpractice has occurred.
Of the 39 so far reviewed, it has been found that 13 suffered “severe harm”, 9 suffered “low/moderate harm”, 2 have been referred for further peer review and the remaining 15 experienced no harm or gave any cause for concern.
The surgeries so far review revolve around the work of Yaser Jabbar, who was a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital and performed a number of surgeries involving limb reconstruction.
It has been suggested that one patient may have had a limb amputated unnecessarily, another child has been left with one leg up to 20cm shorter than the other and other patients are still in chronic pain years after their surgery.
Yaser Jabbar no longer works for the Hospital Trust and reportedly left his employment there in 2023.
Stories like this are obviously incredibly upsetting to read and can also often cause parents, families and loved ones to consider their experiences in similar situations.
