Training Contracts
Training Contract & SQE Pathways
As an established and long-standing SRA training provider, Talbots currently offers two distinct types of Training Contract:
- “Train to Specialise” Training Contracts and Solicitor Apprenticeships are exclusively offered to existing colleagues in a full variety of our practice areas as part of their ongoing career development and continuous employment.
- The firm also offers “Business Services” Training Contracts, which include rotations to specific practice areas within commercial disciplines.
Application Process
There are no deadlines or closing dates for current employees who are looking to qualify via the Training Contract or SQE pathways. Applications from employees are accepted all year round, after discussion with their line manager / HoD as to when they are ready to submit their internal application as part of their ongoing career development plan.
External applicants can apply for a Business Services Training Contract by applying initially for a place on our Summer Vacation Scheme.
We recommend that aspiring lawyers (not currently employed by Talbots) who are interested in pursuing any type of qualification pathway apply for one of our current vacancies in the area of law which interests them most. If successful, we can then discuss their career progression aspirations at interview and during their onboarding.
Qualifying as a Solicitor at Talbots
With just under 500 colleagues across our 11 regional offices, we typically start 10-15 new Trainees each year and therefore have around 20-25 Trainees and Solicitor Apprentices at any one time.
Our Trainee Solicitors & Solicitor Apprentices train and quality under the supervision, guidance and support of Directors, Associates and Senior Associates. In addition to the expected practical work-based training and professional studies, Talbots Trainees take part in regular “Enhanced Training” workshops which are bespoke Director/Manager-led sessions covering the full range of legal services offered by the firm as well as workshops on BD/networking, compliance/CoC, finance/SARS etc.
Talbots encourages our Trainees to attend a wide range of networking activities across the region in addition to social events, charitable and other giving-back opportunities. The firm has developed a proven reputation for “training to retain” and seeing Training Contracts as the part of an ongoing career progression for future business leaders. Our retention rate for Trainees is very high and many of our previous Trainees have gone on to become leaders and specialists across the firm.
