After the success of our Summer Vacation Scheme in 2024, it’s set to make a return for 2025 offering those on a legal pathway valuable insight into their potential future career in law.
What Is the Talbots Summer Vacation Scheme?
Participants are given the opportunity to spend a week with Talbots Law, experiencing real legal work, learning directly from experienced lawyers, and building connections that last beyond the week. It’s a fantastic introduction into a career in law. Find out how to apply.
Meet Fin Morgan: 2024 Scheme Participant
We sat down with Fin Morgan, Apprentice Solicitor and participant of our 2024 Summer Vacation Scheme, to learn more about his experience.
Q. What was your legal pathway before the Summer Vacation Scheme?
A. I completed an undergraduate degree in History at the University of Manchester, which helped me develop strong analytical and research skills. Wanting to transition into law, I went on to study the MA Law conversion course at the University of Law in Birmingham. It was during this time that I applied for the Summer Vacation Scheme, seeking practical experience to complement my studies.
Q. What was it like to participate in the scheme? What did you learn?
A. The scheme provided a valuable insight into the legal profession, particularly within the business services sector. I had the opportunity to shadow experienced lawyers, gain exposure to client work, and better understand the role of a trainee solicitor. A highlight was working alongside professionals and other participants on live matters, where I was encouraged to contribute ideas and explore possible solutions to ongoing client cases; an experience that was both challenging and rewarding.
Q. What was your favourite part of the scheme?
A. One of the highlights was meeting colleagues from a variety of professional and educational backgrounds and hearing about their unique routes into law. It was inspiring to learn how varied career paths can be, and it broadened my perspective on opportunities within the profession. I enjoyed networking opportunities throughout the week, including a social evening at Flight Club, which provided the opportunity to appreciate the social side of working at Talbots.
Q. What has your career pathway looked like since the scheme?
A. After completing the vacation scheme, I joined Talbots as an apprentice solicitor. The apprenticeship structure, working four days a week and dedicating one day to study, has provided a great balance between practical experience and continued learning. I’m currently completing my first seat in the corporate and commercial team. I’ve had the opportunity to assist senior lawyers with tasks such as drafting legal documents for business acquisitions, gaining hands-on exposure to complex legal work.
Q. What are the biggest differences between the training scheme/education and full-time work here at Talbots?
The vacation scheme offers a valuable introduction to the workings of a law firm. You gain the chance to observe how legal teams collaborate and communicate. In contrast, full-time work provides a much deeper level of involvement, with greater responsibility and the opportunity to contribute directly to client matters. You quickly become embedded in Talbots’ culture, developing practical skills, professional judgement, and a strong understanding of how different departments work together.
Q. What would you say to somebody who is considering applying to the scheme?
A. The scheme is a fantastic opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the legal profession and experience the day-to-day workings of a law firm. It also gives you the chance to ask questions that you might not have had the opportunity to explore elsewhere. Whether that’s about the firm’s culture, career progression, or what life as a trainee really looks like. It’s a supportive environment where you can have honest, personal conversations with people across the business and truly get a feel for what Talbots is all about. For anyone considering a legal career, it’s an invaluable stepping stone.
